Full “Strawberry” Moon set to rise Friday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Just a single day removed from the summer solstice, June’s full “Strawberry” Moon will make a cameo Friday evening in our skies.

Moonrise in the Syracuse Region will occur at 9:08 p.m. If you have trees, houses, etc. blocking the horizon, you’ll need to wait a bit for it to rise above that.

The “Strawberry” moniker does not come from any reference to different visuals. Rather, the term references berry-picking season. That doesn’t mean you can’t see something other than a pure white Moon. If you have a good view of the horizon around moonrise, you’ll notice the color appears orange. This has nothing to do with this particular Moon, but rather the result of light traveling through more atmosphere. We see the same effect with sunsets turning a more vibrant hue. The “Moon illusion” can also come into play, making the Moon appear bigger than it really is (especially if you have something like trees as a point of reference). This is a trick our minds play on us, but it looks really cool!

As the Moon rises higher and we lose reference objects, it’ll then look normal again. As it rises, the atmosphere thins and it’ll turn the usual white color. Essentially, all the good stuff happens around moonrise, so shoot for that.
