Your Stories Q&A: Why did this busy street in Auburn not make the summer paving list?

AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!
Viewer Question: Why is North Street (Route 34) not on the list of streets the City of Auburn plans to repave/repair this year?
The viewer claimed the heavily traveled route is one of the roughest stretches of road in the city.
Let’s back up a bit before we move forward…
The City of Auburn is proposing to spend $1.4 million on resurfacing and sealing cracks on the following streets: Havens Ave, Maple St, Metcalf Dr, Pulsifer Dr, Scammel Ave, Steel St, and Walnut St.
Mayor Jimmy Giannettino said road work should begin in the next few weeks.
The reason North Street (Rt 34) did not make the list is because it’s a state-maintained road, not a city street.
Giannettino said the city knows North Street needs attention but it’s a much larger project than they can fund locally.
He said the city will meet with New York State Senator Rachel May’s office in hopes of securing state funds to fix the route in question.
“This would be a similar project to the Arterial which will be reconstructed in 2025,” said Giannettino.
According to the City of Auburn, the New York State Department of Transportation is currently working on a plan to repave Arterial West and East (Route 5&20). It’s slated to cost $18 million.
Mayor Giannettino said the DOT will, “mill and fill” Route 5&20 from the city line to the city line. He said the project is slated for 2025.
We’ll keep you posted on Auburn’s push to get North Street repaired.
