SU students of color enjoy special graduation ceremony

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s graduation weekend up on the hill of Syracuse University. For some graduates, this year’s ceremonies mean a little something extra.

For some, it’s their first graduation ceremony.

“Class of 2024 what a ride it has been. As we eagerly packed our bags to leave for college, little did we know that COVID-19 would flip our world upside down,” said Brianna Gillfillian, a 2024 SU graduate and native of Jamaica.

The pandemic left many 2020 high school seniors without a proper graduation ceremony

“I did not have a high school graduation, but I had like a photo day, so just walk up take a picture with your principal, and then kept going, so that was the most graduation that we got,” Gillfillian said.

Which makes ceremonies like this that much more special.

And this isn’t your average ceremony, it’s one celebrating the achievements of Syracuse University graduates of color.

“I did not have one in high school, so having a ceremony with people who look like me reminds me of what I missed out in high school,” Gillfillian said. “Now, I finally got to that space with my people and with people that look like me and are just as successful as me

And they will all be forever Orange in Syracuse.
