Road closure due to a fire on Route 48 leads to a tractor-trailer crash half a mile down the road

LYSANDER, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Both a fire and a crash on Route 48 sent first responders to the same area of the highway overnight.

Just before 10 p.m. on May 29, the Phoenix Fire Department was sent to a single-family ranch-style home on Oswego Road, Route 48.

There was a large fire, and when NewsChannel 9 arrived at the scene, the home was charred. Eight fire departments were called in to help.

The Phoenix Fire Department says that at least two people were inside at the time of the fire, but were able to get out safely. However, one firefighter suffered from a minor leg injury and was treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Although the fire scene was cleared around 2:28 a.m., just after 1 a.m. on the same morning, a tractor-trailer accident occurred less than half a mile from the fire.

New York State Police responded to a crash on Oswego Road, Route 48, and Rabbit Lane.

According to NYSP, a 39-year-old from East Syracuse was parked on the side of the road which was closed due to an emergency — that being the fire — when he was hit by another tractor-trailer, driven by a 33-year-old from Syracuse.

The Syracuse driver was headed northbound when he failed to see the parked tractor-trailer, hitting it from behind.

The Phoenix Fire Department’s Chief, Scott Doody said that if that parked tractor-trailer didn’t stop the incoming one, there would’ve been a different outcome for his fire crews.

The 33-year-old was taken to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries, and the parked driver was not injured.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
