No Canadian wildfire smoke yet; any on the way?

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – Something we haven’t really talked about this year is the presence of Canadian wildfire smoke in our skies here in central New York.

It’s hard to forget the eerie scenes and poor air quality that were delivered to our area in conjunction with last year’s bouts of wildfire smoke.

A view of downtown Syracuse Tuesday, June 6, 2023 as thick smoke moved into CNY.

Comparing what is happening now versus this time last year, there are not as many active fires in Canada.

The Fire Weather Index, a product of Natural Resources Canada indicating fire danger, is notably lower and less extensive when compared to this time in 2023.

Looking ahead, it does appear that the risk for above, or even well above average fire danger is forecast to increase across central and western Canada during the month of June. This could very well bring smoke back to our region, along with the potential for poor air quality.

A reminder, here in New York a brush burn ban remains in effect until May 14 in an effort to prevent wildfires.
