NewsChannel 9 wins two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — NewsChannel 9 has won two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.

The award, from the Radio Television Digital News Association, honors the depth and scope of NewsChannel 9’s work in 2023.

NewsChannel 9’s awards were for:

  • Overall Excellence
  • Best Newscast for NewsChannel 9 at 6:00.

The station competed in the small market division against other news television stations in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The winners from 14 regions across the country will now compete for the national award which will be handed out later this year.

The overall excellence entry showed the work the NewsChannel 9 team does every day, including Your Stories investigations that began with calls and emails from viewers, OnTheLookout.net coverage to help keep our community safe, as well as local sports coverage.

Stories that were highlighted included coverage of the impact of Canadian Wildfires in CNY from June 2023, the killing of Brexialee Ortiz-Torres in January of 2023, the ongoing problems with bridge impacts on the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge, and tornadic thunderstorms and flooding from August 2023.

It also included programs such as Bridge Street, Extraordinary People and Places of Central New York, Veterans Voices, Honoring Black History, Remarkable Women, The St. Patrick’s Parade, Orange Nation, and more.
