New York ranks as 7th riskiest state for pet illness

NEW YORK STATE (WSYR-TV) — We certainly love our furry friends, and dealing with pet illness can lead to a lot of worry and stress.

In a new report released by Forbes, New York ranked as the seventh riskiest state for pet illnesses.

New York has significant occurrences of giardia in both cats and dogs. The report also stated that dogs living in New York are at an increased risk compared to the rest of the U.S. of Lyme disease and anaplasmosis due to tick bites.

There were also 122 reported cases of rabies in cats in the Empire State in 2023, which is nearly five times more than the study’s average of 25 cases per year.

Also, Central New York is especially prone to ticks and tick-borne illnesses due to a breeding ground being right at the Green Lakes.

West Virginia, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Kentucky, Maine and Oklahoma ranked as the top six states with pet illness risk worse than New York.

Nevada came in as the state with the lowest risk of pet illness.
