LIVE: Thruway worker killed in crash on 1-90 East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A deadly crash on I-90 between LeRoy and Henrietta has led to all eastbound lanes getting blocked.

All traffic on these lanes is being directed to take Exit 47 toward LeRoy. News 8 was told by New York State Police that a fatal crash led to these closures.

The NYS Thruway Authority advises drivers to seek alternative routes or to expect delays. The closure is expected to last for several hours.

According to Trooper Lynea Crane, NYSP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision just before 12:30 p.m. Following an investigation, NYSP found that a tractor-trailer operated by a 64-year-old man that was going eastbound struck two NYS Thruway Authority workers.

Troopers said a 62-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 58-year-old man was taken to strong and said to be in critical condition.

Trooper Crane added that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet. She added that drugs and alcohol were not a factor and the victim’s IDs are pending as families are being notified.

“This is obviously a tragedy and it could have been prevented if we were all just paying attention and slowing down,” said Trooper Crane.

Governor Kathy Hochul released the following statement on Thursday:

Earlier today, a Thruway Authority maintenance worker lost his life while setting up a work zone on the I-90 in Henrietta. Another was injured in the same incident and remains in serious condition. We are heartbroken over this senseless death, praying for the recovery of the injured worker, and grateful to first responders who sprang into action to support their fellow public servants. This incident is a tragic reminder: responsible driving is a life-saving skill, and all New Yorkers should remain alert, slow down, and move over when approaching a work zone or stopped vehicle.
