Syracuse Police arrest suspect in suspicious homicide investigation

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Syracuse Police Officers have arrested a suspect in the suspicious homicide investigation from March.

On Wednesday, April 3, Syracuse Police located and arrested the suspect, 22-year-old Destany Widger of Syracuse, for the death of 32-year-old Jamar Martin

Just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, Syracuse Police Officers responded to the 300 block of Basin Street for the report of a deceased person.

Upon arrival, officers found Martin dead, and determined the death to be suspicious. They then began their investigation as a homicide, according to Syracuse Police.

An investigation was commenced by CID Homicide Unit detectives where numerous people were interviewed and an extensive neighborhood and citywide canvass was conducted. In addition, several search warrants were executed, evidence recovered was processed and thoroughly analyzed.

As a result of SPD’s efforts, members of the Syracuse Police Department Warrant and Homicide Units took Widger into custody without incident in the 700 block of E. Laurel St. on April 3, and was taken to the Public Safety Building, Criminal Investigation Division. 

Widger was charged with the following crimes: 

  • Penal Law 125.25, Murder in the Second Degree
  • Penal Law 265.01, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree

Widger was later lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center, where she is being held pending her arraignment.
