Scammers are posing as Syracuse Police, solicited $2,000 from recent victim

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Syracuse Police Department are asking residents to be vigilant.

They were recently made aware of a phone scam throughout the City of Syracuse.

Scammers will call using Syracuse Police’s number, (315)-442-5200, in an attempt to solicit money and donations.

In one instance, a victim lost out on $2,000.

“The unknown scammer claimed to be a member of the Syracuse Police Department, stating that the victim needed to pay in order to fix an issue with their visa. Ultimately, the victim purchased $2,000 in gift cards and sent them to an unknown ‘WhatsApp’ account that was immediately canceled after the transaction,” said Syracuse Police.

Syracuse Police say they will never call you and ask for money or donations.

Remember, if something seems like a scam, your gut feeling might be right.

Before sending money or giving any information over, double check who you’re really talking to, what they’re asking for, and so on.
