Rome woman faces arson charges

Shoved lit pieces of paper under boyfriend’s apartment door

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Rome woman faces arson charges after she tried to set her boyfriend’s apartment on fire on Tuesday, April 23, according to Utica Police.

Officers were called to an apartment on Kennedy Plaza at approximately 8 am on Tuesday. Upon their arrival, they spoke with the resident of the apartment, who stated that he was allegedly having an argument with his girlfriend — later identified as 22-year-old Kaylen Schloop of Rome.

Police say as the argument escalated, Schloop allegedly lit several pieces of paper on fire and slid them under the apartment door. The victim stated that he was able to douse the papers without incurring any major damage.

The case was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit of the Utica Police Department. Later in the day on Wednesday, Schloop was arrested without further incident and transported to the Utica Police Department.

Schloop was ultimately charged with:

  • Third-degree Arson, a Class C Felony.
