President to announce Micron funding, declares Syracuse a ‘Workforce Hub’

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The White House is revealing new information about President Joe Biden’s visit to Syracuse on Thursday.

As expected, when President Biden speaks from the MOST in Armory Square, he’ll formally award Micron more than $6 billion in federal funding for its semiconductor manufacturing facilities, including the future Clay megafab plant.

The president will also announce Syracuse as a new “Workforce Hub,” which the White House says will help ensure that all Americans can access jobs created by the president’s “Investing in America agenda,” which includes the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.

The CHIPS and Science Act is the law under which Micron is receiving $6.1 billion in funding to help build the Clay mega fab plant, along with its Boise manufacturing facility.

“This is a historic moment for semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S.,” said Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. “Micron’s leading-edge memory is foundational to meeting the growing demands of artificial intelligence, and we are proud to be making significant memory manufacturing investments in the U.S., which will create many high-tech jobs. We appreciate the foresight of U.S. President Joe Biden, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and the bipartisan delegation in Congress that supported the CHIPS and Science Act. Their steadfast focus championing these strategic investments will ensure U.S. semiconductor competitiveness for generations to come.”

Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and the state of Michigan will also be announced by the president as new “Workforce Hubs.”
