OCC student headed for internship at Micron’s headquarters inspired by President Biden’s visit

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — More than three years into a four-year psychology degree, Kah-Lelle Akins changed is mind.
“I was getting burned out,” Akins said in an interview with NewsChannel 9. “I shouldn’t be doing it, wasting money.”
As a way to make money, he remembered his time working in a local UPS warehouse.
“I was just chucking packages,” he remembered, “making sure they got to the right zip code.”
“I had the thought of, ‘Okay, how can I make this more efficient?’ You know, ‘How can I get into the systems? How can I get into the design layout of what they’re doing here?’”
Akins enrolled in the electromechanical technology program at Onondaga Community College.
This summer, he’ll intern at the sprawling high-tech campus of Micron’s Headquarters in Boise, Idaho.
Akins is taking advantage of the workforce development programs and eventual jobs opportunities that have come with the company’s $100 billion promise.
He’s beginning to believe the hype, especially after President Joe Biden’s visit to Syracuse on Thursday.
“Everyone around here is kind of skeptical,” Akins said. “…him coming back this time, and talking about the plant in Boise made it feel a little… a lot more tangible.”
