Large fire breaks out at building on Burnet Ave. in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, Syracuse firefighters were called to a fire at the 400 block of Burnet Avenue, after 911 callers reported seeing smoke from I-690.
Fire crews arrived at 430 Burnet Ave. and saw black smoke billowing from an overhead door of a mixed-use building. Smoke was also seen coming from the rear of the building, SFD said.
Firefighters then stretched hoses into the building and began to search for people possibly trapped inside. The building had a garage area, offices and housed several different businesses, according to SFD.
No people were found in the search and everyone had escaped before the fire department arrived.
Crews were able to get to the fire fairly quickly, SFD said, and put out a large portion of the flames within 10 minutes.
But as crews were putting out that fire in one part of the building, fire began to show near the roof in a different part of the building. Firefighters had to start opening holes in the roof and exterior sheathing to get to the flames.
More crews were called to assist and hoses from firetruck ladders were stretched to the roof.
The fire was totally put out after roughly 60 minutes.
The building suffered fire, water and smoke damage. Syracuse Fire Investigators are working to determine what started the fire.
No civilians or fire personnel were injured, SFD said.
