Your Stories Q&A: Why is my mail being delivered late in the evening?

CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer!

Occasionally, the Your Stories Team will hear from viewers with complaints about disruptions to their mail service.

A viewer named Kevin from Clay, sent us the following question: What’s going on with the mail? For the past two weeks, it’s been arriving late in the evening or every other day.

Kevin lives in a Town of Clay neighborhood, not far from Buckley and Taft Roads.

USPS spokesperson, Mark Lawrence confirmed there’s been some disruptions with that particular route in Clay. He said it was due to “employee availability issues.” He added that all mail continues to be delivered daily.

“At times service can be disrupted occasionally due to employee availability for reasons such as illness, personal leave, retirements and more that may impact mail deliveries on some routes,” Lawrence said in an email.

Lawrence said during staffing issues, USPS will rely on other carriers to work overtime, use additional carriers from nearby offices and expand mail deliveries to earlier in the morning or later in the evening to make sure letters get delivered.

If you have concerns about your mail delivery, you can call (800) ASK-USPS (275-8777).

If you find yourself in a similar situation as this viewer, Lawrence sent the following recommendation:

We recommend customers sign up for Informed Delivery. It’s a free feature that enables consumers to preview their mail and manage their packages scheduled to arrive soon. For more information, go to
