Syracuse Police look for 5-year-old’s body in woods, mother accused of beating her to death

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Syracuse Police are searching for the body of a 5-year-old girl after her mother was accused of killing her.

29-year-old Latasha Mott is accused of intentionally hurting her 5-year-old daughter, Nefertiti Harris, causing her death.

Court documents obtained by NewsChannel 9 show that Mott allegedly hit the child multiple times while in the shower, including with a belt.

That beating happened in January, detectives say.

Mott is also accused of hiding the body, as she “intentionally took steps to conceal the body of her daughter from law enforcement personnel. These steps included secreting the child’s body in a wooded area,” the papers read.

The child’s disappearance came to the attention of police when a relative noticed the Harris’ absence.

Police were hopeful to find the child alive, but realized she had been dead for a while.

Mott is charged with:

  • Manslaughter in the 1st degree
  • Concealment of a Corpse

The mother had court Monday morning, and is currently in jail with no bail set.
