Syracuse Police, D.A. to give briefing about missing 5-year-old

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — At 3:15 p.m. Syracuse Police Department, along with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh will give a briefing related to the search for 5-year-old Nefertiti Harris, who detectives say was beaten to death by her mother.

Police have been searching day and night for the child’s body after her mother, 29-year-old Latasha Mott, was accused of hiding the body.

They have been searching in the woods and on fields behind an apartment building on Salt Springs Road.

As of the afternoon of March 26, K9s have been brought in to assist with the search.

NewsChannel 9 just has reported that one strategy Mott is suspected of using to hide her 5-year-old daughter’s death was transferring her, in name only, to another school after she had already died.

A spokesperson for the Syracuse City School District told NewsChannel 9 that 5-year-old Nefertiti Harris was transferred from McKinley-Brighton Elementary School to Meachem Elementary School on January 16, 2024 along with some of her siblings.

However, court paperwork indicates Harris being beaten to death by her mother ten days earlier, on January 6, 2024.
