Sunday night crash in Verona leaves one dead

Pedestrian was hit by express van, no citations issued

VERONA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A passenger-vehicle accident on Sunday, March 10 in Verona has left one person dead, according to the New York State Police.

Police were called to Route 365 near Stoney Brook Road in the town of Verona at approximately 10:10 PM on Sunday. Further investigation found that the driver of the vehicle — driven by 55-year-old Mark Thompson of Rome — was driving eastbound on State Route 365.

As he was driving, the pedestrian — identified as 25-year-old Tyler Atkinson of Oneida — was walking down the shoulder of Route 365 when he stepped into the lane of travel and was subsequently struck in the crash.

Atkinson was transported to Oneida Health, where he was pronounced dead. Thompson was not injured in the crash. Thompson also tested negative at the scene for any alcohol/drug impairment.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Oneida Indian Nation Police and EMS personnel.

According to police, the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
