Otsego County man sentenced on embezzlement charges

Embezzled over $38,000 from Remington Arms labor union

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Richfield Springs man learned his fate in federal court on Thursday, March 21, after pleading guilty to embezzlement charges.

40-year-old Jay Garnsey of Richfield Springs pled guilty to the charges, and admitted that from 2015 to December of 2019 he was employed by Remington Arms. During that time, he was named the financial secretary of the union that represented employees of Remington Arms.

As part of his guilty plea. Garnsey admitted that while he was financial secretary, he submitted fraudulent reimbursement vouchers — among other things — to embezzle money from the union. Garnsey also admitted the grand total of all union funds embezzled totaled over $38,000.

Judge David Hurd sentenced Garnsey on Thursday to four years probation. His conviction for this offense prohibits him from also serving as a union officer or employee for at least 13 years, among other civil disabilities.

Garnsey was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and was required to make full restitution form the labor union.
