Onondaga County Executive looking ahead to younger generation’s bright future

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – County Executive Ryan McMahon delivered his State of the County Address on Thursday evening, March 14.

To McMahon, kids are the most precious resource.

“For the first time since I’ve been a public servant since 2006, I can look any child in the eye, including my own, and say you’re future will be here and I’m telling the truth,” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said.

Investing in the youth is the future of the county, and districts like ESM are making sure their students are set up for success when Micron arrives.

“Obviously we want people to come into this community and move into our community as we grow, but I think overall we, through our PIE platform, have been investing historic amounts of funding for kindergarten readiness. We’re now incorporating workforce development strategies at all levels for the jobs that are going to be here that continue to grow. Everybody is focused on Micron, as we should be, but we highlighted amazing investments that are the envy of every other community surrounding us,” McMahon explained.

From chip camps, to new semi-conductor exhibits at The MOST, to the expansion of the Erie 21 program, kids of all ages are growing their minds. McMahon is ensuring their brains are being supported in the right way.

Sponsored by philanthropist Vinny Lobdell, all school personnel will be trained in suicide prevention this upcoming school year.

“We’re going to train all school district employees to look for these warning signs so we can get our kids help. And that’s really important to me, and I know it’s really important for the community at large,” the County Executive said. “We all need to know the signs when someone is struggling,” McMahon explained.

Caring for the mind now, so it can continue to flourish later.
