Behind the scenes at American High

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Lights, camera, action! Nearly 20 movies later, and the action is still rolling out in Liverpool.

“It feels like you can ask anybody a question about what was the first time that they ever did… whatever., and there’s usually a good story that comes with it, right?” Jeremy Garelick, founder of American High, said.

And so many of those firsts happen in high school, so why not buy an old school to make movies about them? Cue American High, where if you don’t have the set, you can create it.

“It’s much easier to build stuff here than it is to find a hospital, hotel, to go shoot in because you don’t have to move, right?” Garelick explained.

Something you might not know about the school turned movie studio? It’s still a school.

“When we bought the high school, we didn’t realize it was set in the village with a board and a mayor and all that, and there’s zoning laws, and they said you can’t do that there, and I said, why? And they were like, you’re not zoned for commercial use, you’re zoned for school. I said, Alright, so we’ll become a school. We’ll become a trade school, a film school,” Garelick said.

And that’s exactly what they did, offering opportunities for students to earn credit at the school, with a surprising outcome.

“In what started as a necessity to get zoning resulted in building an ecosystem to make our business better and our crew better,” Garelick said.

Coming soon for American High… breaking into the TV world.
