Syracuse’s northside suffers from another fire, house burns for hours

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Just after 7 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, Syracuse Fire crews were sent to 212 Seward Street for a structure fire.

Once SFD arrived, they found a two-and-a-half-story multiple-family home on fire, with smoke and flames bursting from the sides of the first and second floors and back of the home.
After a search, no one was found trapped inside. The home was known to be vacant
The fight with the fire went on for hours. SFD says firefighters worked for nearly four hours to extinguish the flames and even after, crews were still at the scene chasing “stubborn” hot spots as of 12 p.m.
The roof and chimney collapsed into the home and the first and second floors now have severe fire, smoke and water damage.
“Wintery weather caused minor complications during the operation, as crews dealt with sub-freezing temperatures, slippery surfaces, and blowing winds that fanned the flames,” said SFD.
Because of this, firefighters from different parts of the City of Syracuse had to rotate in and out and a Centro Bus was brought in to work as a warming station for the crews.
There were no injuries reported to civilians or crews.
Syracuse Fire Investigators were at the scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
So far, 49 Fire Department personnel have responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, National Grid, The American Red Cross, and Centro also responded.
