Legette-Jack to Serve as Grand Marshal of Syracuse’s Juneteenth Victory Parade


SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University Women’s Basketball Coach Felisha Legette-Jack will be one of two Grand Marshal’s for Saturday’s Victory Parade in Downtown Syracuse. A native of Syracuse and 1989 graduate of SU, Legette-Jack returned home as the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2022. Before her playing career on The Hill, Legette-Jack led Nottingham High School to a pair of New York State Championships.
Every year, communities across the nation gather to commemorate the day of emancipation from slavery in Texas, the final state to abolish slavery, on June 19th and celebrated across the nation as Juneteenth.
Syracuse will celebrate Juneteenth with a two-day festival that acknowledges the role many people in central New York had in achieving and maintaining freedom and equality in America.
The 2022 Juneteenth Festival will be the first one in Syracuse since Juneteenth became acknowledged as a federal holiday. Events begin Friday, June 17th with a Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall and continue with the Miss Juneteenth Pageant.
On Saturday, June 18th the Victory Parade begins at 11 a.m. from the Dunbar Association, marches up N Salina Street to the front of City Hall, and will be followed by festivities outside of City Hall. Legette-Jack and fellow Grand Marshal Syracuse Common Councilwoman Rasheada Caldwell will lead the parade procession.
