#4 Orange Extend Winning Streak Against Pitt

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse senior Meaghan Tyrrell recorded eight points and graduate student Emily Hawryschuk scored four goals to lead the No. 4 Orange to an 18-6 victory against Pittsburgh. It marked Syracuse’s fourth straight win and improved its ACC record to 5-0, which is ‘Cuse’s best start since joining the conference.
 
Hawryschuk assisted on the Orange’s first goal of the game for her 300th career point. She is just the fifth player in program history to record 300 or more points in her career. She now has 305, which rank fifth on Syracuse’s career record list. In addition, Hawryschuk also increased her career goal total to 245, which is 15 shy of the school record held by current head coach Kayla Treanor.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (10-2, 5-0) trailed, 4-2, after the first quarter but came alive in the second quarter. Meaghan Tyrrell scored before assisting on Emma Tyrrell’s goal to give the Orange their first lead of the game. Emma Tyrrell continued the scoring run, converting on a free-position attempt, and Hawryschuk recorded the final goal of the half to send the Orange into the locker room at halftime with a 7-4 lead.
 
Syracuse dominated the second half. The Orange outscored Pittsburgh (6-7,0-6), 16-2, over the final three quarters to pull away and stay undefeated at home.
 
OF NOTE
Meaghan Tyrrell tied her season high with six goals to lead the Orange. She was one of eight different members of the Orange to score at least one goal and one of four to score multiple goals. That group included junior Savannah Sweitzer, who scored twice and finished with a career-high three points.
 
The Orange won the battle in the draw circle, winning 16-of-27, including 12-of-15 in the second half. Junior Kate Mashewske again led the way with 10 draw controls to go along with her first career goal.
 
Defensively, the Orange held their opponent to less than 10 goals for the fifth time this season. Kimber Hower made seven saves, picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover. Katie Goodale also had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
