Sam Swart Q&A

Graduate student Sam Swart has been a mainstay in the Orange midfield for the past five years. Learn more about the Coopersburg, Pa. native in this Q&A.

When did you start playing lacrosse and what made you take up the sport?
I started playing lacrosse when I was in second grade. I actually started doing gymnastics because my sister was an Olympic gymnast back in 2006. She made it to the Olympic trials and then blew out her knee, unfortunately. I realized this sport is not for me and I’m not into individual sports. I got on the (lacrosse) field and I loved the team atmosphere. I knew this was my sport.

What made you decide to come to Syracuse?
I wanted to come here to play basketball when I was in the seventh grade. My parents told me I might be a little too small. My mom suggested I try a lacrosse camp instead, trying to soften me up a little bit, and so I went to the lacrosse camp and immediately fell in love with Gary (Gait), and the program and the family atmosphere.

What made you want to come back for your fifth year?
Honestly, what’s the rush with wanting to be in the real world – especially if I get to play another year with these girls. Why I really came back was wanting to win and I didn’t like it how it ended last year.

Has it been everything you hoped it would be?
Yes! Everything and more! And especially with our new addition of Kayla Treanor. That’s amazing.

When you were growing up was there any player you looked up to and tried to emulate?
I would say Kayla Treanor. I know it sounds cliched, but that who our generation looked up to – Kayla Treanor and Taylor Cummings. Those were a dynamic duo.
