Tyrrell's OT Goal Lifts #3 Orange by #17 Fighting Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Syracuse senior Meaghan Tyrrell scored an unassisted goal in overtime to give the No. 3 Orange a 17-16 victory over No. 17 Notre Dame in the ACC opener for both teams. The win improves Syracuse’s record to 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange led by two at halftime and entered the fourth quarter with a 14-9 lead. The Fighting Irish (1-4) outscored Syracuse 4-1 in the first 7:14 of the fourth to get within two at 15-13. Junior Emma Tyrrell converted on a free-position at the 6:11 mark to extend the lead back to three, but Kasey Choma’s goal at with 1:48 on the clock cut the deficit to one at 15-14.
The Orange won the ensuing draw, but turned it over and Notre Dame took advantage as Mary Kelly Doherty scored on a free-position attempt with 16 seconds left to force overtime.
Syracuse won the draw to start the extra session and head coach Kayla Treanor called timeout. The Orange worked the ball into their offensive end and Meaghan Tyrrell started her dodge on the right side and scored on a low shot to give Syracuse its first overtime win since 2018.
OF NOTE
Meaghan Tyrrell finished with two goals and moved into a tie for ninth place on Syracuse’s career goals scored list with 141. She also increased her career point total to 219, which is three points shy of tying Nicole Levy for 10th place on the school career points leader list.
Emma Tyrrell tied her career highs with seven points and three assists to lead the ‘Cuse offense. She also recorded a career-high nine draw controls, helping the Orange to a 16-12 advantage in the draw circle. Graduate student Emily Hawryschuk scored four goals, while senior Megan Carney added three goals and an assist.
Goalkeeper Kimber Hower matched her season high with five saves. The Orange defense forced 19 turnovers. Senior Sarah Cooper caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
