Tyrrell Earns National Player of the Week Honors


SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse senior Meaghan Tyrrell is this week’s USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Women’s Player of the Week after her performance in the Orange’s two victories during the opening weekend of the season. Tyrrell recorded 14 points and 11 goals in the two games.
Tyrrell accounted for half of Syracuse’s scoring in its 12-9 victory against No. 13 Stanford on Friday night. She scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to give the Orange their first lead of the game at 6-5. Tyrrell also had three goals during Syracuse’s 6-1 scoring run in the second half that put the game out of reach. Tyrrell recorded her 200th career point in the victory.
In the second game of the weekend against Binghamton, Tyrrell led the way with five goals and three assists, helping the Orange to a 23-6 win. She had a goal and two assists during Syracuse’s 6-0 scoring run to start the game. Her final goal of the day came with 2:22 left in the third quarter, which gave the ‘Cuse a 17-4 advantage.
Tyrrell and the No. 3 Orange are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 when they take on No. 4 Stony Brook at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse is celebrating Lacrosse Legends Day as all-time greats Gary Gait and Katie Rowan will have their jerseys retired and legendary coach Roy Simmons Jr. will join Syracuse’s Ring of Honor.
