Orange Host Panthers, Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Syracuse (8-10, 1-7 ACC) returns home to the Carrier Dome Sunday for its first of two meetings against Pittsburgh in the next 14 days. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. on ACC Network with Jenn Hildreth and Kelly Gramlich on the call. The Orange will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day with multiple Syracuse women’s sports teams in attendance. 

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is an annual day of observance, held during the first week of February to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. This year NGWSD falls on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022. 

The Orange look to improve their home record to 9-3 this season and snapping a six-game ACC losing streak. Syracuse is coming off an 83-62 loss at No. 20 Notre Dame on Thursday night. The Orange have been through the gauntlet of ACC play, facing nationally-ranked opponents in five of their last six games since Dec. 30 and top-20 opponents in the last four games. Teisha Hyman leads the team with 15.4 points per game, 4.3 assists and 2.6 steals while adding 5.7 rebounds per game, which is second on the squad. She enters Sunday’s game against the Panthers hot off a 22-point performance where she shot 50 percent from the field (11-22) and added eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals to flirt with a quadruple double for the second time this season. All five Orange starters average double figures in scoring and as a unit ‘Cuse averages 73.8 points per game. 

Pitt (11-9, 2-7 ACC) is riding high after a 78-73 overtime road win at Clemson Thursday night. Dayshanette Harris had a team-high 16 points while the Panthers leading scorer Jayla Everett and Amber Brown added 15 points each. Pittsburgh has won two of its last four games with both of its confernece wins coming in the last four games. 

Tip-off is set for noon on Sunday. Fans unable to attend can watch live on ACC Network or through the ESPN app. Following Sunday’s game the Orange travel to Miami to face the Hurricanes at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3 on ACCNX.
