ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh last Saturday to move to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the Dome. The 18-6 win over the Panthers marked ‘Cuse’s fourth straight victory. Senior Meaghan Tyrrell recorded eight points (6g, 2a) while grad student Emily Hawryschuk added six points (4g, 2a).
Goalkeeper Kimber Hower performed well again. The junior has found her stride of late, tallying 19 saves and a .500 save percentage in the Orange’s last two games.
ORANGE AGAINST NO. 1
Syracuse will face the top team in the nation for the 30th time in program history. The Orange’s first win against the No. 1 team came in the 2012 NCAA Tournament semifinals. Syracuse overcame a seven-goal, second-half deficit to defeat Florida in double overtime, 14-13. The win sent ‘Cuse to the national championship game for the first time.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina is the only undefeated team (12-0) in Division I and has won their last three games by an average margin of 11.3 goals.
Senior Jamie Ortega paces the Tar Heels in points with 65 (seventh in the nation), while graduate goalkeeper Taylor Moreno leads a strong defense that allows 8.7 goals per game (sixth in the nation).
North Carolina has won six games this season by at least 10 goals and has played only one game that was decided by three or less goals – a 16-15 victory over the defending national champion Boston College.
SERIES HISTORY
Syracuse and North Carolina have met 16 times in their programs’ history, with the Tar Heels holding a 10-6 advantage in the series. However, the Orange have a winning record (3-2) when facing North Carolina in the Dome.
‘Cuse will try to avenge two losses to the Tar Heels last season, with the ladder defeat coming in the ACC Tournament championship game, 9-4.
