Orange vs. #1

Syracuse is no stranger to playing the top-ranked team in the nation. The Orange will once again take on the best of the best as they gear up for their 30th matchup with a No. 1 ranked team when they host North Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Fans can purchase tickets at Cuse.com/tickets. All attending Saturday’s game are encouraged to arrive early as the Orange will celebrate Senior Day with a pregame ceremony.
‘Cuse’s first win against No. 1 came in dramatic fashion in the 2012 NCAA Championship semifinal game against Florida. Falling behind 12-5 with a little more than 17 minutes left to play, the Orange went to work. After cutting the lead to 13-8, the Orange scored the next five goals of the game, including a free position goal with 30 seconds left to send it to overtime. Following a scoreless first overtime period, senior Sarah Holden was able to score the game winner to give ‘Cuse the impressive upset victory and send the Orange to the championship game for the first time in program history.
Another significant No. 1 matchup came two years later in 2014 as Syracuse faced top-ranked North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. Current head coach Kayla Treanor scored seven goals to lead the No. 3 Orange to a 12-9 upset of the Tar Heels. The Orange went on to the NCAA Championship game for the second time in three years where it lost to No. 1 Maryland.
