Some jurors brought to tears by gruesome video showing Brexi getting shot and dying

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Some members of the jury were brought to tears as the prosecution’s opening statement included gruesome video footage showing the murder of 11-year-old Brexialee Torres-Ortiz in January of 2023.

The footage was taken from surveillance cameras recording from above, showing three men get out of a stolen SUV and fire at least 13 shots toward another man near a white car. It also shows the silhouette of a young girl walking into the barrage of gunfire.

Other footage, from a Syracuse Police Officer’s uniform-worn camera, shows a closer view of 11-year-old Brexialee Torres-Ortiz laying bleeding and dying on the sidewalk as first responders try to save her life.

The footage was included in a presentation to the jury by Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Robert Moran in the 25-minute opening statement.

Moran laid out some of the evidence the prosecution will use to convince the jury that 21-year-old Dahviere Griswold is one of the three men who fired after getting out of the SUV.

17-year-old Deckyse Bridges and 18-year-old Ra’Sean Patterson have already admitted guilty to charges of murder, admitting the three of them all fired weapons.

“They’re hunting,” Moran said. “They’re looking for somebody to shoot. They’re looking to do bad things.”

The group was aiming for Isael Cruz, as seen in the video, but the gunfire also hit the 11-year-old who was killed by two gunshot wounds.

The defense’s opening statement followed, but didn’t include a presentation and took about five minutes.

Quickly, the judge kept the trial moving. The prosecution called a Syracuse Police Office as its first witness.

The second witness will start off Day 3 of the trial on Wednesday.
