Student-Athlete of the Week: Marcellus’ Annabella Mondello

MARCELLUS, N.Y. (WSYR) — After sitting out in the off-season recovering from surgery, senior Annabella Mondello is back and reaching new heights for Marcellus softball.

“Just going through PT and all that just I think it made me stronger. Just being able to see where I was in September and see where I am now. So it was a little different getting back into it, especially just not hitting or pitching for so long, but just seeing that we are already successful and that I’m able to get back to around where I was. It’s just very cool to see my growth,” said Annabella Mondello.

More than just being back on the field, Annabella pitched a no-hitter this season and passed 400 strikeouts in her career.

“I know that there was apprehension from her, like, am I going to come back and be as strong as I was before, and I really think that that no hitter for her, you know, helped alleviate some of that worry. Like, you know, I am back, and I can still do this,” said Marcellus head coach Lisa MacLauchlan.

In her senior season, she has stepped into her leadership role on the team as well.

“We have four captains, and we work really well together. So that just helps with the mentorship through us to the underclassmen. And definitely just like including the underclassmen and everything they do and making them feel like they’re part of the team,” said Mondello.

“Anabella is a leader for us on and off the field. The pitcher, obviously, often dictates the game and Annabella certainly does that. You know, when she’s on the mound, watch out, it’s a hard day for the other team,” said MacLauchlan.
