Student-Athlete of the Week: Nottingham’s Miyanah Robinson

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Miyanah Robinson only started running track in seventh grade and began high jumping even after that.

“I like to jump a lot. I used to do cheer, so I used to do jumps. So that correlated with that,” Robinson said.

She didn’t even know what high jumping was before her coach told her to try it out. Since then, she has trained rigorously to get to the point she is at today

“The high jump is all about technique and getting your form down. Originally, I was so bad. I didn’t know how to get my form down, how to get my head back. And then my coaches started bringing in more coaches that knew a little bit more about getting my technique right. And I started to get it, and it started to flow,” Robinson said.

At the beginning of March, Miyanah took home the state title in the high jump, jumping five feet and six inches.

“The official came over and told her, you’re the state champ. And she just started taking her shoes off like you wouldn’t have known if she had lost or won. And then when she looked over at us, and I gave her a little clap, but she had a smile at that point. But she’s just so humble and so quiet. And it was kind of funny to watch her at that point,” Dan Pusey, Nottingham’s coach, said.

Despite her humble attitude, she knows how important her success is… for herself and for her school.

“I’m from Nottingham, and it’s a city school, and city schools are usually overlooked. So I knew that I did something for the city schools. A lot of people downgrade Nottingham as sports go. It feels good to bring Nottingham back up because originally, we did have good sports,” said Robinson.
