Wegmans donates $5 mil. for nursing education at St. John Fisher University

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation donated $5 million to nursing education programs at St. John Fisher Univeristy Monday.

SJFU said the money, part of the university’s “Fisher Forward” fundraising campaign, will be used to enhance experimental learning opportunities within The Wegmans School of Nursing, expanding the pipeline of newly-minted health care professionals within the Rochester region.

“This gift reflects Danny and Colleen [Wegman]’s commitment to making an impact on issues in health care, specifically by ensuring the availability of top talent in the metro Rochester area,” SJFU President Dr. Gerard Rooney said in a statement issued Monday. “We are appreciative to the family for their belief in our ability to provide transformational educational experiences for our students, many of whom go on to pursue health care careers in our community.”

The Wegmans School of Nursing was established thanks to an $8 million 2006 donation from the Wegman family to the university. It remains the largest monetary gift in SJFU history.
