EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A national trend is taking over TikTok. This time, it’s pre-teens seemingly obsessed with skincare.
Kids ages nine to 13 are spending hours and hundreds of dollars inside makeup stores to then post their expensive multi-step skincare routines on TikTok.
The #tweenskincare has 49.5 million views on the social media site, featuring videos of kids putting on serums, creams and even curling eyelashes.
These videos might be getting likes online, but Board Certified Dermatologist Brian Raphael with Empire Dermatology cautions they may be doing more harm than good.
“This young age group has latched on to buying all these products that are really not designed for them,” he said.
Raphael said just because something is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s better.
A lot of these lotions and serums have chemicals that can cause issues for such young skin.
“Dry skin, irritated skin from a rash, allergic reactions that we see often,” said Raphael.
So what should kids and parents be doing? The most important thing is sunscreen.
“That [sunscreen] is the best investment you can make for your skin if you’re worried about your beauty as a kid, as a teenager, as a young adult,” Raphael said.
If your kid wants to use a cleanser or moisturizer, he said it’s best to talk to their doctor about what will work for their skin type.
“Make it fun. These kids just want to have fun, they want to be part of something,” Raphael said.
Parents can help them find ways to do it safely, while reminding them that beauty is born from within, not what you put on your skin.
