Student-Athlete of the Week: Weedsport’s Nolan Carner

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (WSYR) — Nolan Carner is a senior on the Weedsport swim team but has only been swimming competitively since he was 13.

“It just honestly, it makes me happy. Like this is what I love to do. That’s really about it, is just being in the pool, being with my teammates. I really enjoy it,” Carner said.

For him, it’s the personal motivation that drives him in the pool.

“A lot of races, it’s really me against the clock, and I do it for that. It helps me get better when I just want to improve my time and don’t care about anything else besides that,” Carner said.

This season, Nolan broke two long-standing pool records, one in the 200-yard freestyle and the other in the 50-yard freestyle.

“It means a lot, especially because those two records were broken here at home. So a lot of my friends and family came out and supported me and saw me break those records. So that really means a lot,” said Carner.

Well, it honestly wasn’t really expected on the school record side, I think it was just really exciting because the records dated back to the ’80s and the ’90s, and I don’t think anybody thought those would get broken for a long time. So we’re really proud of him for that,” said Jill King, the Weedsport swim coach.

The records mean that Nolan’s name will be a part of Weedsport history for a while.

“I think it shows a lot of growth for me. I didn’t want to leave with nothing. This makes me very happy to have my name up there,” Carner said.
