Nicki Minaj, the notorious self-proclaimed “queen of rap”, is facing extreme criticism and the threat of being dethroned.
On January 26, 2024, Megan the Stallion dropped her single ‘Hiss’, and despite the lack of marketing and announcements, the single made a big splash within the female rap community and fans.
Megan’s fans loved the song, but more importantly, they loved Megan’s boldness of calling out other rappers through witty verses. Although never mentioning her name, the biggest diss of the song was aimed and loaded at Nicki Minaj.
In Megan’s song she references Megan’s Law as a way to throw shade at Nicki. To understand this diss, we must first know Nicki’s history and what Megan’s Law is.
Nicki’s history is packed full of scandal so keep up!
First up is Kenneth Petty, Nicki Manji’s husband, who was convicted in 1995 for attempted rape of a 16-year old girl. After failing to register as a sex-offender in California in 2020, Patty then faced a three year probation sentence in 2022.
Likewise, next is Jelani Minaji, Nicki’s older brother, who is currently serving a 25 year sentence after being convicted of predatory sexual assault for repeatedly raping his 11-year old stepdaughter.
However, Nicki is not completely in the clear herself as she has also faced controversy over her actions with a suggestive song and underage fans. In 2011, Nicki was booed on stage for giving a 13-year old boy a lap dance at her concert. In 2009, Nicki released a song with Lil Twist, who was a 16-year old rapper, titled ‘Old Enough’. If the title isn’t enough, the song has Lil Twist begging Nicki to give him a chance and Nicki responding with verses like,”See, little boy, I can be your little teacher…And if you ball, then meet me behind the bleacher” or “I want to ride on the (Uh-huh) back of your scooter (Uh)”.
If you’re not tired yet, Nicki has also faced controversy due to the male rappers she collaborates and creates music with. The most notable for his convictions being Tekashi 6ix9ine who pleaded guilty in 2015 for using a child in a sexual performance.
Now we can look at the definition of Megan’s law. Megan’s law is New York State’s Sex Offender Registration Act that requires sex offenders to register with the state in order to provide parents with useful information about their community.
So now that we understand the background of the diss we can understand why it is an insult. Megan the Stallion is calling out Nicki’s association to convicted child predators and is even drawing attention to Nicki’s twisted actions in the past. Without even directly saying Nicki’s name, Megan was able to get fans of the late rap queen to call into question the morality of Nicki’s actions and associations.
However, Nicki could not let Megan’s disrespect go unanswered and released her own single 3 days later on January 29, 2024.
Nicki titles her song ‘Big Foot’ as an insult to when Megan was shot in the foot by another rapper Tory Lanez. Unlike Megan’s ‘Hiss’ song, Nicki directly refers to Megan with verses such as “For a free beat, you could hit Megan raw, If you a ghostwriter, party in Megan jaw.” Nicki also raps about Megan’s dead mother and insults Megan’s promiscuous relations. Finally, Nicki ends the song with an outro of disoriented talking which many fans found as a sign of Nicki’s unstableness.
As Nicki’s song rose to the top of the charts, Megan has yet to respond.
However, despite the single’s success, the house of Barbz is a house divided. Some fans love Nicki’s clap-back while others found it distasteful, especially the mention of Megan’s dead relative. Some fans worry about Nicki’s mental health as they believe her to be spiraling based on her Instagram live videos where she seems unhinged due to her incoherent muttering. Some fans still love Nicki’s music but agree that Nicki’s association with child predators is gross. Some fans are still disappointed with Pink Friday 2 and could care less about the drama.
So the questions now are what will Megan say in response? Is Nicki spiraling out of control? Does Nicki still deserve the female rap crown? Is Megan deserving of the throne?
Answer: We will have to see or should I say listen in order to find out…
