Erie County man allegedly flees scene after snowmobile crash in Lewis County

MARTINSBURG, N.Y. (WWTI) – A 29-year-old Erie County man is facing multiple charges after allegedly crashing his snowmobile in Lewis County and then fleeing the scene on the evening of Monday, February 19.

Lewis County Sheriff’s Officers allege that Nicholas Roberts of Elma was operating his 2023 Polaris Martyx 850 cc and failed to negotiate a curve. Roberts collided with a tree on the Rector Road in the Town of Martinsburg.

Deputies were notified of the accident just after 10:40 p.m., but Roberts reportedly left the scene without notifying authorities.

Officers said that Roberts was transported to another location when Turin Ambulance Squad responded, treated him for injuries and took him to Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

Roberts was then taken to SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for further treatment.

He was charged with reckless operation, imprudent speed, failure to report a snowmobile accident as well as leaving the scene of a snowmobile accident.

Roberts was given appearance tickets for the Town of Martinsburg Court set for a later date.
