BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s been one year since 14-year-old Ava Wood was shot and killed by her father in an apparent murder-suicide in Baldwinsville.
Wood meant so much to the Baldwinsville community and the Central New York community, who have been a part of the Facebook group “Remembering Ava Wood,” which is hosting a remembrance night one year after Wood’s murder.
The Facebook group, which is run by Wood’s family, has posted about several events over the last year to honor the life of Ava, including a fundraiser set up by friends and students who knew Ava, a fun run, and even a memorial scholarship.
Now, the group is celebrating one year of remembering Wood at the Word of Life Youth Building in Baldwinsville on Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the Central New York Community is invited.
Wood’s family posted a statement on Facebook in the group after the announcement, thanking the Central New York community for their support and for keeping Ava’s memory alive.
“Thank you for the continued outpouring of love for Ava. Over the last several months, it has been an incredible experience to witness the impact that Ava’s life has had on people here in Central New York and around the world. The memories you’ve shared on social media have made us smile and reminded us of how incredible Ava truly was. We want to encourage you to continue honoring Ava’s life in your words and actions. Smile- even when it’s difficult. Laugh – loud and often! Be kind and inclusive – everyone is going through something, and your kindness might change the course of their life for the better. Soak up every moment and remember that the most important gifts in life are family and friends.”
At the gathering, supplies to create and decorate memorial lanterns will be provided to guests to light up the night sky and celebrate Ava Wood.
