Pennsylvania man charged with murder in Lewis County death

LOWVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – A 24-year-old Pennsylvania man will face second-degree murder charges while Lewis County Sheriff’s Deputies investigate a death at a hotel in the county.

In a Thursday press release, sheriff’s officials were called into River View Lodge in Lowville Saturday night, January 6. Deputies found 39-year-old Brandon Shepker of Coudersport, Pennsylvania dead. Shepker was sharing a room with Jacob Vanbergen, also of Coudersport.

The town of Coudersport is located in Northern Pennsylvania.

Authorities investigated and said injuries were “consistent with a physical altercation and strangulation.”

New York State Police and sheriff’s deputies traveled to Pennsylvania and found “further information was developed and an arrest warrant for murder 2nd was issued” for Vanbergen.

Vanbergen is currently being held at the Potter County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsylvania as a fugitive from justice. He is currently awaiting extradition to New York.

The cause of Shepker’s death was not made public in the press release. Lewis County Sheriff’s officials thanked Lewis County Search and Rescue, the Broome County Coroner, New York and Pennsylvania State Police, the Lewis County District Attorney’s Office and the Potter County District Attorney’s Office.

The press release also thanked “the many businesses in the area that assisted with video surveillance.”
