OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A popular Oswego bookstore called The River’s End is now cleaning up the mess from a car that crashed into their building.
Oswego Police say 22-year-old Mark Kahler of Rome went through a red light in the Port City, swerved to avoid oncoming traffic, and crashed into the store around 8 p.m. Sunday night, Jan. 21.
Police were dispatched to the store on 19 W. Bridge St. and when they got there, they saw Kahler’s brown 2014 Chevy Equinox had collided with the side of the building.
After officers conducted an initial investigation and interviews, they determined that Mr. Kahler was traveling westbound on W. Bridge St. when he passed a steady red signal at W. Bridge St./W. First St.
A second vehicle, described as a dark-colored sedan, was traveling northbound on W. First St. through the intersection. Kahler then veered to the right of the sedan to avoid collision and subsequently drove onto the sidewalk and into the front of the River’s End bookstore.
Police determined that Kahler wasn’t impaired while driving and he wasn’t injured in the accident.
Kahler was issued five traffic tickets for:
- Passed red signal
- Moved from lane unsafely
- Driving on the sidewalk
- Imprudent speed
- Reckless driving
Mr. Kahler is scheduled to appear in Oswego City Court on 02/01/2024 at 9:30 a.m.
The Oswego Fire Department, Menter Ambulance, and the Oswego City Codes Department all helped assist The Oswego Police Department with this investigation.
