SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Mainly quiet for most of CNY, but heavy lake snow continues east-northeast of Lake Ontario into Thursday. How much snow falls north of Syracuse through midweek? Details are below…
Lake snow continues to pile up for some…
Band of very heavy lake effect snow continues to dump snowfall rates as high as 2-3” for southern/central Jefferson County just south of Watertown into central Lewis County. These areas picked up 1-2+ feet of snow Wednesday and will see even more Thursday.
Outside of that heavy band it’s another cloudy and chilly start to the day in CNY.
Midday Thursday – Thursday evening:
The heavy lake snow will move back north towards Watertown around lunch time and stay there through sunset Thursday.
In parts of these areas another 1 to 2+ feet of snow is expected in the most persistent snows through Thursday with very rough travel and near 0 visibility at times!
Due to threat of additional significant accumulations, a Lake Effect Snow Warning continues for Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties through 7pm Thursday, while the Winter Weather Advisory for southern Herkimer County is in effect until 10 am Thursday.
Light snow/flurries are expected across CNY thanks to Lake Erie and a little disturbance come Thursday afternoon. Only a coating to an inch is expected.
When does it end?!
The band will drift back south and weaken before finally fizzling out Thursday night. The wind is shifting to the north-northeast which is going to shut the lake effect down for now.
It stays cold through the rest of the week with highs ranging from the upper teens to mid-20s, while wind chills range from 0 to +15 through Friday
Quick shot of snow Friday
A new system is moving to our south Friday which will bring some light to occasionally moderate snow to CNY. This is mainly going to impact areas along and south of the Thruway. This is not expected to be a high-impact storm for us. Accumulations are expected to stay a couple of inches or less, however.
What we’re really notice is the bittern cold air funneling in the Northeast behind this. Wind chills over the weekend will however around 0º. Some lake effect snow will be around the Syracuse area again since the wind is coming from the northwest.
