Nelly Furtado is having a moment, which has most people wondering if this is the mark of a major comeback for the artist. The “Promiscuous” singer recently starred in the new SKIMS campaign featuring a lineup of legendary women (including And Just Like That‘s Kim Cattrall), and in the process, she showed off her flawless skin and timeless fashion taste.
Since she chose her own looks for the shapewear brand, Furtado gave Billboard some insight into how she styles her favorite pieces as well as tips for today’s “lawless fashion” sphere, as she describes to us.
“I will say that if you’re going to invest in one thing, buy a sheer black tight,” she says. “You can wear it with a skirt, you can wear it in the fall, in the spring. Honestly, nowadays, there’s never been a more lawless time in fashion — you can even wear them in the summer.”
Layering for Furtado is essential — especially when it came to choosing her SKIMS pieces for the campaign, as you can combine comfort with style.
“There’s something about stretchy material and sheer that you can kind of dress up or dress down,” she explains. “And I do that. I’ll have different bodysuits — including my SKIMS bodysuits. I’ll just put them underneath a sheer dress and it gives you that extra layer of confidence.”
Furtado loves this mid-thigh style, and it’s easy to see why. It come in 10 shades to choose from, has strong compression that targets the stomach, waist and legs and, as an added bonus, the material has butt-lifting pockets in the back to help create a more lifted appearance.
We found this affordable sheer mesh dress that features a ruched pattern and short sleeves you can pair with the above bodysuit and more.
What are her other fashion picks? The star is also leaning into Y2K looks as she explores her “sensual” side, including textured cargo pants and cutoff tank tops.
Gap is having a stellar deal on these vegan leather cargo pants, which gives you Furtado’s style without breaking the bank. It comes with a high-rise waist and a lot of pockets to store all your small items in.
Complete one of her many go-to outfits with this less than $10 cropped tank from Urban Outfitters. It comes in a variety of colors to stock up on and is made from a soft ribbed material for added texture and style.
You can also rarely see the artist without her Balenciaga sneakers, which she says are “so comfortable, and at airports, I can slip them on and off very easily. Yeah, and it’s weird, but they match everything — I’ve [even] worn them onstage.”
As skincare continues to dominate our everyday lives, Billboard also set out to find out what exactly helps keep Furtado’s skin looking smooth and glowing. Her biggest beauty secret is one that’s not only the most affordable, but is something you do on the daily: drink water.
“What I do when I have a photo shoot or an appearance is I drink a lot of water,” she says. “That’s not the only thing I do, but one thing that I think has really helped is I drink a lot of water — like, a lot, a lot, a lot of water. Because I find that if you’re hydrated just in general, your skin just looks so much better.”
That’s not all, though: Furtado has been using the same skincare routine for over 20 years, which includes a soft exfoliator from Guinot that she describes as “not just an exfoliator.”
Unlike a traditional face exfoliator that you rub onto your face then immediately wash off, Furtado says this one makes you almost give “yourself your own Lymphatic massage a few times a week.”
The “Like a Bird” singer likes to apply it to her face then wait until the texture liquifies while massaging it into her skin, claiming it helps bring “blood flow and circulation to your face.”
