On September 16th, DJ Garrett Murphy (better known as “it’s murph”) came to join us for a live interview before his performance at Syracuse University. In case you missed it, check out the interview below where we chat with it’s murph about his recent music, going viral on TikTok, festival performances, and more!

Interview led by Ilana Epstein and Molly Lindstrom. Video by Tim Skeval.

it’s murph recently graduated in May from the University of Southern California, where he doubled as a student and a producer. He released his debut solo single “Food For The Soul” in February of 2023, earning over 4 million streams in just a month. In addition to being placed on Spotify’s “mint” editorial playlist, the track quickly blew up on TikTok, landing a spot on the Viral 50 US chart. In promoting the song on TikTok, it’s murph shared that he initially created “Food for the Soul” for a class assignment, with the prompt to “write a story, and build a track around a story showcasing the techniques you learned.”

Inspired by popular DJs such as Fred Again… and Chris Lake, it’s murph’s music puts a melodic and euphoric spin on the dance world. At such an early stage in his career, he has already performed at some of the nation’s largest music festivals: Coachella, Electric Forest, Hangout Festival and more.
