Tyrrell Named Preseason Player of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate student Meaghan Tyrrell is USA Lacrosse Magazine’s 2023 Division I Women’s Preseason Player of the Year. Tyrrell is one of five members of the Orange named to the publication’s preseason All-America teams.

Tyrrell was a finalist for last year’s Tewaaraton Award after recording 111 points on 78 goals and 33 assists. She ranked sixth in the nation in goals and seventh in points. Her 78 goals were one shy of the school single-season record. Tyrrell recorded her 300th career point and 200th career goal in 2022.

Tyrrell was also named to USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason All-America First Team. Senior Kate Mashewske was selected to the second team, while graduate student Megan Carney, senior Emma Tyrrell and junior Emma Ward were honorable mention selections.

Mashewske ranked sixth in the nation in draw controls per game last season, averaging 8.48 per contest. Her 178 draw controls a year ago rank third on Syracuse’s single-season record list. Mashewske recorded 10 or more draw controls in eight games, including the win against Louisville when she tied the school record with 19.

Carney was an All-ACC Second Team selection last season after recording 48 points on 31 goals and 17 assists in 16 games. She posted four or more points seven times last season, including a season-high eight in the win at Virginia Tech. Carney recorded her 200th career point in 2022.

Emma Tyrrell recorded 50 points on 30 goals and 20 assists in the first 12 games of the 2022 season before suffering a season-ending injury. She also recorded 64 draw controls, which ranked second on the team. Tyrrell posted four or more points in six contests and had three or more goals four times.

Ward missed all of the 2022 campaign after suffering a season-ending injury in preseason camp. She earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team in 2021 when she ranked second on the team in points (73) and assists (30) and was third in goals (43).

Syracuse opens the 2023 campaign on Saturday, February 11 against Northwestern in the JMA Wireless Dome. Season and individual game tickets are on sale now at Cuse.com/tickets.
