‘Cuse and Pitt to Celebrate Centennial Anniversary of Football at Yankee Stadium

Syracuse and Pittsburgh will celebrate the centennial anniversary of the first football game played at Yankee Stadium when the ACC rivals face off on Nov. 11 in the Bronx. The 1923 meeting between the two teams laid the groundwork for a long history of football at Yankee Stadium, which has now hosted over 200 college football games, 10 of which Syracuse has previously participated in, and established a bowl game.

“This game is 100 years in the making and will celebrate a milestone anniversary in a historic venue,” said Director of Athletics John Wildhack. “The unique circumstance of a centennial anniversary, coupled with six strong opponents scheduled to visit the JMA Wireless Dome, will make this year’s home schedule an impactful experience for our student-athletes and continue a longstanding partnership with the Yankees organization. I look forward to our fans giving us a tremendous home field advantage in Yankee Stadium, just as they have in all our previous trips.”

It’ll be the first regular season neutral-site contest for the Orange since 2018 when Notre Dame moved its home game against ‘Cuse to Yankee Stadium as part of the Shamrock Series. Syracuse’s full 2023 schedule will feature six home games, five road games and one neutral-site game. The full slate will be announced on Monday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.

Syracuse season ticket packages will include the six scheduled games in the JMA Wireless Dome. Tickets for the Pitt game will go on sale at a later date, with 2023 Syracuse season ticket holders receiving exclusive first access to purchase discounted tickets.

Season ticket renewals will launch in conjunction with the schedule release later tonight via fans MyCuse Account. The deadline to renew season tickets will be May 1. Fans interested in becoming a new season ticket holder can place their deposits at Cuse.com/Tickets, securing their spot for the 2023 season. There will be no price increases in 2023, while some sections will see price decreases as the $99 season ticket offer will expand to additional sections this season.

The first meeting between Syracuse and Pitt at Yankee Stadium, a 3-0 Orange victory, came on Oct. 20, 1923 in front of 25,000 fans at the old stadium. Syracuse has since played nine other times at Yankee Stadium, including three Pinstripe Bowl appearances, and own a 7-3 mark all-time.

It’ll also be the Orange’s 39th game played at a professional stadium in the Greater New York City area, having also played 15 times at The Polo Grounds, eight times at Giants Stadium, four times at MetLife Stadium and once at Shea Stadium.

This season’s meeting will be the 79th in the series between Syracuse and Pittsburgh. The Panthers are ‘Cuse’s most frequent opponent in history and own the all-time series advantage by a mark of 43-32-2.

Syracuse will host Clemson, Army, Wake Forest, Boston College, Colgate and Western Michigan in the JMA Dome this season, with road dates scheduled at Florida State, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

The Orange will enter the 2023 season building off a Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl appearance, and return many key pieces. Quarterback Garrett Shrader will enter the year as one-of-five active FBS quarterbacks with over 5,000 passing and 1,500 rushing yards in their career. His primary target, Oronde Gadsden II, led all tight ends nationally in receiving yards last season and earned First Team All-ACC accolades. He set Syracuse’s single season records for receptions and receiving yards by a sophomore, and receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in 2022. ‘Cuse also welcomes back its leading tackler, Marlowe Wax, and sacks leader, Caleb Okechukwu, from this past season.
